Description

Delicious Upside Down Orange Cake is moist, tender, and bursting with fresh citrus flavor. Caramelized orange slices bake beneath a soft vanilla-orange cake, then flip into a glossy, bakery-worthy dessert that’s easy enough for weeknights and stunning enough for guests.

Ingredients

For the topping:

1/4 cup unsalted butter

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 large oranges, thinly sliced

For the cake:

1½ cups all-purpose flour

1½ tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

3/4 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

Zest of 1 orange

1/2 cup fresh orange juice

1/4 cup milk

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a round cake pan.

2. Melt butter and brown sugar together and pour into the bottom of the pan.

3. Arrange orange slices evenly over the sugar mixture.

4. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.

5. In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

6. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla and orange zest.

7. Alternate adding dry ingredients with orange juice and milk, mixing until just combined.

8. Carefully pour batter over the oranges and smooth the top.

9. Bake for 40–45 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

10. Let cool for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.

11. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

• Slice oranges thinly for the prettiest top.

• Blood oranges work beautifully when in season.

• Delicious with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
