Description
Delicious Nigerian Meat Pie is a classic West African snack made with a flaky, buttery crust and a savory filling of minced meat, potatoes, and carrots. Golden, satisfying, and full of authentic flavor, these meat pies are perfect for parties, snacks, or special occasions.
Ingredients
For the dough:
4 cups all-purpose flour
250 g butter or margarine, cold
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup cold water
For the filling:
300 g ground beef
1 medium potato, diced small
1 carrot, diced small
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 tsp curry powder
1/2 tsp thyme
Salt and black pepper, to taste
1 tbsp flour + 2 tbsp water (thickener)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
2. In a bowl, rub butter into flour, salt, and baking powder until crumbly.
3. Add cold water gradually and mix into a firm dough. Cover and set aside.
4. Heat oil in a pan and sauté onion until soft.
5. Add ground beef and cook until browned.
6. Stir in potatoes, carrots, curry powder, thyme, salt, and pepper.
7. Add flour slurry and cook until filling thickens. Allow to cool.
8. Roll out dough and cut into circles.
9. Add filling to one side, fold over, and seal edges with a fork.
10. Brush with egg wash if desired.
11. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
12. Cool slightly before serving.
Notes
• Filling must be cool before assembling pies.
• Can be frozen unbaked and baked straight from freezer.
• Traditionally served as a snack or party food.
