General Tso’s Chicken is crispy, sweet, spicy, and packed with bold authentic Chinese-inspired flavor. Crispy fried chicken bites get tossed in a sticky garlic ginger sauce for an easy takeout-style dinner that tastes irresistibly delicious at home.
Ingredients
1 pound boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Oil for frying
For the General Tso’s Sauce:
1/3 cup low-sodium soy sauce
3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons honey
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
For Garnish:
2 green onions, sliced
1 teaspoon sesame seeds
Instructions
1. In a large bowl, whisk together cornstarch, flour, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
2. Dip chicken pieces into beaten eggs, then coat evenly in the flour mixture.
3. Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot over medium heat.
4. Fry chicken in batches for 4 to 5 minutes until crispy and golden brown.
5. Transfer fried chicken to a paper towel-lined plate.
6. In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, honey, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and crushed red pepper flakes together.
7. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.
8. Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until the sauce thickens.
9. Add crispy chicken to the sauce and toss until evenly coated.
10. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds before serving.
Notes
Chicken thighs stay juicier than chicken breasts in this recipe.
Do not overcrowd the oil while frying or the chicken may lose crispiness.
Serve with steamed rice or broccoli for a complete meal.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
